Frequently Asked Questions

  • Scentwork is suitable for dogs of all breeds, ages, and sizes. It can be a great outlet for dogs needing a “job” or outlet, to help build focus, as an outlet for mental stimulation and energy, and as a confidence builder.

  • No, our beginner foundational class is suitable for dogs without prior training or exposure to scent games.

  • Dogs work one at a time while other teams wait their turn. Dogs are encouraged to wait crated or in their car. This allows each dog to focus on the search and keeps the environment conducive to learning.

    • Leash (recommend a 10-12ft long line)

    • Harness (or flat/martingale collar)

    • HIGH value treats or anything your dog finds very motivating

  • I do my best to hold beginner classes at the same location. Intermediate/advanced classes may rotate for “field trips” to provide new training opportunities and novelty. Locations will be centralized around Los Gatos, Saratoga, and Campbell.

  • Classes are kept small to allow for individualized instruction.

  • While nosework can be a great tool for reactive dogs, our in-person classes are not the best fit for dogs with significant reactivity. Drop a message to inquire about remote sessions, instead.

  • Dogs of any age can participate as long as they are fully vaccinated. Scentwork can be a great way to build a relationship and focus with younger dogs.

  • “Scentwork” and “nosework” are used interchangeably. Both refer to training dogs to locate specific odors through search exercises. Typically the American Kennel Club uses “scentwork” and NACSW uses “nosework”.
